Ways to keep your liver healthy.

1. Eat a balanced diet

Your liver performs many different functions, including digestion, detoxification, and producing bile. Your body relies on these processes to function properly. A healthy diet includes foods rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, which help prevent damage caused by free radicals. The best way to ensure a healthy liver is to eat a well-balanced diet.

2. Drink plenty of water

When you have an active lifestyle, you may not always have time to drink enough water. But drinking at least eight glasses per day is optimal for keeping your internal organs functioning correctly. Water helps flush out toxins produced by your body, cleanses your digestive system, and keeps your skin looking fresh.

3. Exercise regularly

Exercise is great for your heart and lungs, but it also helps maintain a healthy liver. Regular exercise stimulates blood flow to the liver, which prevents buildup of fatty deposits. If you’re finding it difficult to fit exercise into your daily routine, try taking brisk walks, swimming laps, playing sports, or dancing.

4. Don't smoke cigarettes

Smoking tobacco damages your liver. Cigarettes cause inflammation, which triggers the release of enzymes that damage cells. These enzymes then attack the delicate membranes lining your liver cells, causing them to swell and eventually die. Smoking cigarettes also reduces the amount of oxygen reaching your liver, making it harder for the organ to cleanse itself.

5. Limit alcohol consumption

Drinking alcohol causes your liver to work overtime. Alcohol dehydrates your body and depletes its natural supply of vitamin C, which your liver uses to break down toxins. Heavy alcohol use can also lead to cirrhosis, a condition where scarring occurs in the liver.

6. Avoid drugs and supplements

Consuming certain medications, especially those containing acetaminophen (Tylenol), can result in severe liver damage. Additionally, some herbal remedies and dietary supplements have been known to cause liver problems, so make sure to consult your doctor before using any products intended for your liver.

7. Reduce stress

Stress is unavoidable, but having too much of it can pose serious health risks. When you feel stressed, your adrenal glands begin releasing cortisol, a hormone that affects your immune system and liver. Cortisol levels increase with anxiety and depression. To reduce stress, try getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, practicing relaxation techniques, and engaging in activities that bring you joy.
